BC Provincial Council – Spring 2010

Please be advised that our Spring meeting will be Fri, Sat, and Sun, May 28, 29, 30, in Kelowna at the Coast Capri Hotel, 1171 Harvey Avenue. The Hotel has made a block of Coast comfort rooms available for us at a rate of $135.00 per night for single or double occupancy. They are only holding the rooms at this rate until April 28th so make sure you book by then.  Delegates needing accommodations can phone the hotel directly at 250-860-6060 (ask for in-house reservations) or they can phone the central reservations office toll free at 1-800-663-1144 to make their reservation. They just need to quote “CEP Provincial Council Meeting” as the Group Block Name or  “CCH-GFC10070” as the Group Block Confirmation Number.

The highlights’ of this Spring’s meeting:

National Finances – CEP Secretary Treasurer Gaétan Ménard will be on hand to give us an overview of the Unions dwindling membership, and how it affects the financial stability of our Union.  He will outline some of the current challenges and what CEP has done to reel in the spending.

Disability & Duty to Accommodate   – Sister Sarah O’Leary will give a workshop on the latest legal cases shaping the law around Disabilities and the Duty to Accommodate.  Sarah has been focussed on Workers Compensation and disability law for the last 19 years. She is a CEP member from Local 465 and also and an associate with the law firm, Rush Crane and Guenther.

Reports and Policy Papers coming to this fall’s National Convention! – Get a preview of the work committees have been doing in preparation for our next convention. Any Locals wanting to pass  resolutions they’re sending to Convention are encouraged to bring them to this Council meeting to give other Locals opportunity to discuss, suggest changes, and get on board with the changes you’re trying to make.

NDP  - Moe Sihota, BC NDP President, will be explaining their strategic plan to win government in 2013.

Plus we will have our regular agenda items, including:

The Bear PitThe elected Rank & File Officers from the Western Region will give their report about happenings at the National Executive Board level and how they might affect you or your Local. Then the floor is opened to allow delegates to questions and/or provide direction to your elected representatives.

National Officers ReportYour Regional Officers report on what is happening in each of the Provinces.

Local Reports All Locals present give reports about current situations at each of their worksites. Both the good and the bad. This gives delegates an opportunity to hear what might be coming their way or a chance to share experiences or remedies if you’ve already faced similar issues.  Delegates are asked to bring 50 copies of their Local Report for distribution.

Provincial Council meetings are scheduled run from 9:00 to 5:00 Friday & Saturday, and 9:00 til Noon on Sunday.  Remember, it’s your Council !

We encourage all affiliated Locals to send delegates.
Hope to see many of you there.

In Solidarity
Ian Simpson
Secretary Treasurer, BC Provincial Council
