BC Provincial
Council – Fall 2009 meeting.
Please be advised that our Fall 2009 meeting will be Fri,
Sat, and Sun, Nov 20, 21, 22, in Vancouver at the Holiday Inn & Suites,
1110 Howe Street. The Hotel has made rooms available for us at a rate of $99.00
per night. Call their direct line at (604) 623-6866 to make a
reservation.
The highlights’ of this fall’s meeting:
New Media –
Ever since the internet exploded onto the scene we have heard how conventional
media channels are destined for extinction. Is there still a place for
newspapers and local TV in our society? Will we really get “the news” if
everyone with a computer can write the story with their personal slant to them,
or is that no different from now.
David Beers, editor of the online news, “The Tyee” will be
on hand to give his views on the subject.
CHEK TV Saved
– Facing closure of their Victoria TV station if a purchaser
couldn’t be found, a group of employees rallied together to become owners of BC
newest truly “independent” television station. Is the trend towards employee
ownership the way of the future or simply a temporary measure until a potential
purchaser comes along?
Hear CEP M1-Victoria Unit
Chair Richard Konwick’s view of how the process unfolded, the
steps taken to secure financiers. What and who helped (or didn’t) and
what their group has planned to keep CHEK alive and on the air.
The Economy and how it
affects you! – Seth Klein from the Canadian Centre for Policy
Alternatives will be on hand to discuss the current Provincial economical
situation. How much trouble are we really in and what can we do to make it out
the other end. What the proposed HST will mean to your pocketbook and is
it too late to stop it!
Plus we will have our regular agenda items, including:
The Bear Pit –
The elected Rank & File Officers from the Western Region will give their
report about happenings at the National Executive Board level and how they
might affect you or your Local. Then the floor is opened to allow delegates to
questions and/or provide direction to your elected representatives.
National Officers Report –
Your Regional Officers report on what is happening in each of the Provinces.
Local Reports –
All Locals present give reports about current situations at each of their worksites.
Both the good and the bad. This gives delegates an opportunity to hear what
might be coming their way or a chance to share experiences or remedies if
you’ve already faced similar issues. Delegates are asked to bring 50
copies of their Local Report for distribution.
Provincial Council meetings
are scheduled run from 9:00 to 5:00 Friday & Saturday, and 9:00 til Noon on
Sunday. Remember, it’s your Council ! We encourage all affiliates to send at least 1 delegate. Hope to see you
all there.
